SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) was brought in to effect as a direct result of the RMS Titanic disaster back in 1912.

It was passed to improve overall safety procedures at sea, by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in conjunction with the United Nations.

Due to a number of high profile shipping accidents as a direct result of over loading or improper loading, a change was required to prevent any future disasters.

From 1st July 2016 it is now mandatory for all Shippers & Freight Forwarders to establish policies and procedures, ensuring the implementation of SOLAS Regulations.

It is therefore the responsibility of the exporter to verify the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of each and every consignment. This provides the shipper the confidence of overall vessel weight. Therefore meaning that the weight of all cargo items and packing materials are added to the shipping containers Tared weight.
